Choosing your swimwear size is the single biggest thing that decides whether a swimsuit feels amazing or ends up back in its packaging. Get it right and your tan-through swimwear will feel like a second skin; get it wrong and even the most beautiful print won't sit properly. This guide walks you through measuring up, understanding how our sizes run, and choosing between two sizes so you can order once and love it.
Start with your measurements
Before you think about small, medium or large, grab a soft tape measure. Swimwear sizing is far more accurate when it's based on your actual body rather than your usual dress size, which can vary wildly between high-street brands. Measure in your underwear, keeping the tape snug but not tight.
The three numbers that matter
For a one-piece or a bikini, take three measurements. Your bust goes around the fullest part of your chest. Your waist is the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button. Your hips go around the widest part of your bottom. Write all three down, because a swimsuit has to work with every one of them at the same time.
How Laura Jayne tan-through swimwear sizing works
Our statement one-shoulder swimsuits, bikini tops and bottoms come in sizes S, M and L. The tan-through fabric we use has a lovely amount of stretch and recovery, which means it moulds to your shape and flatters a range of bodies within each size. That stretch is your friend, but it isn't a substitute for the right size: fabric that's pulled too tight loses the even, sun-through effect that makes tan-through swimwear special, while fabric that's too loose can gape when it's wet.
If you're between sizes on our chart, think about where you carry most of your shape. For a one-piece, prioritise the measurement that's largest, because the suit has to span your whole torso. For separates, you can size the top and bottom independently — one of the quiet joys of buying a bikini rather than a one-piece.
One-piece vs separates: sizing tips
One-shoulder swimsuits
A statement one-piece needs enough length in the body so it doesn't drag on your shoulder or pull at the leg openings. If you're tall or long in the torso, size up rather than down; the extra length is more comfortable than a snug fit that tugs when you sit or reach.
Bikini tops and bottoms
With separates, let your bust guide the top and your hips guide the bottoms. A tan-through bikini top should feel supportive without digging in, and bottoms should sit comfortably on your hips without pinching. Because you can mix sizes, separates are often the easiest way to get a genuinely tailored fit.
When to size up or down
Size up if you prefer a relaxed, fuller-coverage feel, if you're between sizes, or if you're longer in the body. Size down only if you're right at the lower edge of a size range and like a closer fit. When in doubt, size up: swimwear that's slightly generous still looks and feels lovely, whereas anything too tight tends to be the piece that stays in the drawer.
Getting the fit right at home
When your swimwear arrives, try it on over clean, dry underwear and move around as you would on holiday — sit, stretch, raise your arms. Straps shouldn't dig in, the fabric shouldn't gape at the edges, and the print should look smooth rather than strained. If something isn't right, check our FAQ for measuring and returns guidance before you head off.
A note on tanning safely
Tan-through swimwear lets some sunlight pass through the fabric for a more even tan with fewer harsh lines, but it offers only partial sun protection. It is not a replacement for sunscreen. Whenever you're in the sun, apply a broad-spectrum SPF over your whole body — including the areas covered by your swimwear — and reapply regularly, especially after swimming or towelling off. Avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day, seek shade, and give your skin a break. Looking after your skin is always worth it.
